Good Afternoon Families! This week we began our Second Steps curriculum. This program focuses on building social-emotional skills for young learners. The focus this week was being welcoming. The Dragonflies were introduced to our two class puppets, Fred and Jane, and we welcomed them to our class by telling them our names and telling them a little bit about ourselves. This week we also introduced Mat Man. Mat Man, a fun fictional character, is the first step of learning in our Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. Mat Man teaches important readiness skills, body awareness, and cognitive skills through the use of a variety of straight and curvy lines. The Dragonflies read Happy In Our Skin and made face creations with crayons, googly eyes, and yarn and read Chrysanthemum and It's Okay to be Different and finger painted our first names and completed a body parts coloring sheet. During Music, Ms. Li taught us two new songs while we practiced moving to a beat and shaking egg shakers, and in Art we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and made butterflies out of our textured, painted paper from last week.
